main (in some cases – the only) source of information on demographic, ethno-linguistic and socio-economic characteristics of population; possibility to get data by smallest territorial units and by small population groups; There are serious challenges: financial issues, changing the population mentality, the need to reduce the respondents burden, the growing information needs and information technology development; Countries are moving away from the traditional model of the "pure" census, focusing on getting information from different sources;
