Lesson 1.1 Welding Terminologies Base metal Base metal = Metal of workpieces or weldment Which characteristics need to know ? 1) Mechanical Strength Ductibility Resilence 2) Chemical compositions Ferrous Non ferrous Low alliage Alliage 3) Weldability How easy the metal can be welded Which process is suitable Which quality we can expect What need to be cared for welds quality satisfactory Filler metal Filler metal = additional Metal comprising welds Filler metal Electrode Rod Wire Insert filler Welding Flux Flux = Chemical materials applied during welding Flux Requrements Welding flux • Coated Coated electrode Core Tubular electrode / wire • Powder / grain SAW flux • Paste Gas welding / Brazing • • • It remains stable and does not change to a vapor rapidly within the temperature range of the welding procedure. It dissolves all oxides and removes them from the joint surfaces. It adheres to the metal surfaces while they are being heated and does not ball up or blow away. It does not cause a glare that makes it difficult to see the progress of welding or brazing. It is easy to remove after the joint is welded. It is available in an easily applied form.
