By: Susan M. Pojer Horace Greeley HS Chappaqua, NY Historical Background Raphael was seen as being the artist who attained the highest degree of artistic perfection. Students drew from Raphael’s examples, rather than from nature itself. Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in 1848 and was disbanded in 1853 (it was a secret society). Pre-Raphaelite Characteristics Recover the medieval simplicity lost during the High Renaissance. Tension between form and moral content. Everything in the painting is “seen too clearly.” Vibrant colors. Favorite themes --> Arthurian Legend, Hamlet, the Lady of Shallot, Classical Myths, Ancient History. Stunning, beautiful women.
