NDT Societies - All Member States have established their respective National Societies for NDT. Mutual Recognition - All Member States appreciate the need for mutual recognition of NDT certification schemes within the region; efforts are taken to make this proposal to materialize. Neutron Radiography - Most Member States have established their neutron radiography facilities. NDT of Concrete - Almost all Member States have an active programme in this area. 8 ACHIEVEMENTS - NDT & NDE A Training Session on industrial DR and CT in India, 2006 Neutron Radiography image of Turbine Blade (with Solid) - ROK Radiography being performed for pipeline integrity (Singapore) RT Film Scanner in NDT (Indonesia) 9 Radiation Technology Applications OBJECTIVES Radiation processing - treatment technology application for development of Advanced Materials for Industry & Health and Environmental Protection – use of 60Co & EB Besides established technologies and processes like radiation sterilization of medical products, food hygenisation, flue gas treatment etc., RCA countries mainly focused on development and deployment of several products and processes. 10 Radiation Technology Applications - Achievements Grafted polymers for toxic metal ion absorbers Hydrogel wound dressing Polymer waste recycling and remediation Plant growth promoters for agricultural use Radiation engineering of nano materials Electron beam processes for heat shrinkables, diamonds, polymer composites, tyres, viscose rayon and cellulose pretreatment for production of bio-ethanol Chemical formulations for surface curing and cable crosslinking Radiation Technology Applications - Achievements Nano-materials based polymer composites and medical devices Electron beam (EB) and gamma radiation treatment of waste water and effluents containing dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and pathogens ROK established a New National Core Research Center for R&D of Radiation Technology in Jeongup in 2005 to meet the rapidly growing market in the areas of radiation technology. major facilities: two 60Co irradiators using 420 kCi; 10 MeV electron accelerator; ion beam accelerator of 300 keV; gamma irradiation farm Relevant industries accommodated around the center. ROK center playing a significant role for enhanced cooperation with RCA member countries in the field of radiation technology. Typical examples EB Processed Products EB cross linked PE O ring gaskets withstand dimensional stability at high temperatures of about 2000C EB cross linked cable insulations for better performance at 1200C and ageing properties Hydro gels for wound/burn treatment Diamond irradiation for color changes. Plant Growth Promoters and super water absorbents for increasing crop yield like rice and ground nuts, and bio chemicals like essential oils. Application of Sealed Sources & Radiotracers Objectives Demonstration and deployment of radioisotope applications for industrial process management: troubleshooting and process optimization 16 Sealed sources and Radiotracer Applications Achievements Technology developed and applied in most MSs to sustain the commercial routine application of radiotracers for problem solving in priority industrial sectors, e.g. petroleum/chemical process industries for increasing productivity & reducing environmental impact Enhanced awareness regarding benefits of tracer technology created among potential users. Use of different radiotracers propagated. Development of automatic column scanning technology in many MSs Technology developed and demonstrated for inter-well water movement study for Oil Companies in MSs for oil production. Development of industrial process tomography systems in 6 MSs Awareness among member states on use of CFD in process modeling 17 Sealed sources and Radiotracer Applications Achievements Optimisation of Fluidized Catalytic Cracking units using radiotracers technology demonstrated. Leak/blockage location and RTD measurement methodology for pipelines and industrial systems established in most of the MSs. Computer aided radioactive particle tracking technique (CARPT) for flow visualization and validation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models initiated. Ge-68 – Ga-68 and Cs-137 – Ba-137m generators for industrial tracer applications developed by China – tech-transfer to ROK and Pakistan 3 Guidebooks published on Leak Detection, Process Optimization and Use of tracers in oil field investigations. 18 GAMMA COLUMN SCANNING Provides clear internal details Co-60 Detector Gamma Radiation Column Scanner 19 Radiotracers in oil field investigations Interconnection between oil and water injection wells Preferential direction of movement Residence time/ Sweep efficiency To evaluate fraction of injection water reaching production well Reservoir characterization 20 Progress of Project on NCS Objective To demonstrate the technology for Natural Resource Exploration and Exploitation using low activity nucleonic gauges 21 Applications of Nuclear Gauges in Industry Film Thickness Paper Thickness QUALITY CONTROL Beverage Level Oil Level 22 NCS - Achievements 1. Most of the MSs have actively participated and benefitted by the projects under Thematic sector – Industry capacity & competency building A number of Radioisotope & Radiation based technologies have been developed and deployed for sustainable development of industry and for societal benefits wider deployment facilitated Experience & progress achieved in various Member States have been shared. Significant human resource development has taken place due to these activities through RTCs and Regional workshops. Information has been disseminated through publication of success stories and monographs published by the IAEA. 24 Thank you RTC On-line PGNAA System for Coal Analysis [email protected]; [email protected] 25
