Positive Behavior Interventions and Support at Carroll Elementary What is Discipline? For protection: to protect them from danger or be removed from an unsafe situation. To get along with others/avoid conflict (early prevention) To understand limits (expectation, consequences, & rewards) To act in an appropriate and/or orderly manner. Understand logical consequences of their actions. (Taking responsibility) Learn common expectations that everyone lives by such as respect and responsibility. Learning & understanding community values Teaching….. • “If a child does not know how to read, we teach”. • • • • “If a child does now know how to swim, we teach”. “If a child does not know how to multiply, we teach”. “If a child does now know how to drive, we teach”. “If a child does now know how to behave, we teach….. punish?”. What is PBIS? • PBIS is a 3 – 5 year process. • Over 2,000 schools across the country -have implemented PBIS. • 50% or more schools reduce their office referrals by 50% the first year. • This is a data driven program. • PBIS is a process for creating safer and • more effective schools. PBIS focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. WHAT IS PBIS? • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • PBS is a broad range of systematic and individualized strategies designed to prevent problem behavior with all students so that they may achieve important social and learning outcomes. PBS is… • Proactive and preventative • Instructionally focused • Based on empirically sound Data-bases These school-Wide Systems create a school environment that is : • Predictable—Uses a Common language for all staff and families.—Common Vision & understanding of expectations. • Positive—Ongoing teaching and recognition for positive behavior. • Safe— Consistent process for addressing problem behavior Continuum of behavior support • Consistent—All Adults use the same expectations through all school environments (classroom, hall, recess, restroom, etc.) What is PBIS? (cont.) • It is a SCHOOL-WIDE design for discipline. • It is team-based systematic planning. • It is for (and by) ALL students, ALL staff, and in ALL settings. • It is a program that can be upgraded as we go along. • Each month we will analyze the discipline data. • We will survey the staff, students, and parents for upgrades. What is different about PBIS?
