Finnish Experience of Business Intelligence (BI) Practices Virpi Pirttimäki, M.Sc., Researcher Mika Hannula, Dr.Tech., Professor Institute of Business Information Management Tampere University of Technology Finland Background • Objective and Method – Describe BI practices in Finnish organisations – Present the current state of BI research in Finland – Discuss future challenges and opportunities in the field – Based on surveys and a literature study • The role played by BI has significantly expanded in Finnish companies in the recent years 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 2 What is Business Intelligence? • • • Can refer to processes, techniques or tools to support the making of faster and better decisions At the Institute of Business Information Management, BI is understood as an organised and systematic process by which organisations acquire, analyse and disseminate information significant for their business activities The term has not yet become very well established 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 3 Why Business Intelligence? • In the literature: – Avoid surprises – Support and accelerate planning and decision-making -> decrease reaction time – Better identify dangers and opportunities – Out-think the competition and business environment – Increase sharing of information • How is a situation in Finnish companies? 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 4 Finnish Studies on Business Intelligence • There have been four studies in recent • years Researches have been quite superficial -> The results have been general in their nature • There have not been any case studies on BI 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 5 The Institute of Business Information Management (BIM) (1/2) • • • • • BI is one of the emphasis areas BI research launched in the autumn of 2000 The only academic research unit in Finland that is applying the managerial perspective in BI Several scientific papers and publications, in addition to a Master’s Thesis and research reports have resulted from the previous research Is launching a new research project on BI processes 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 6 The Institute of Business Information Management (BIM) (2/2) • BIM and Business Intelligence Forum Finland carried out the first comprehensive study on BI in Finland in the spring of 2002 – The objective of the study was to determine how common BI is and how BI is currently being applied in large Finnish companies – The TOP-50 Finnish companies by sales revenue were telephone interviewed – The return rate reached 92 per cent 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 7 Market-Visio Inc. • A Finnish analysis and research service • company specialised in information technology and telecommunication Has carried out two BI studies in 2001 and 2002 – Both studies have focused on BI solutions of Finnish organisations – The perspective of both studies was technological 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 8 Observer Finland AB Inc. • An expert organisation which provides BI and • communication intelligence services Carried out the study on BI with Laurea Polytechnic in the autumn of 2002 – The objectives of the thesis were to find out: • the present state of BI • the scope of application of BI • the level of structuring of BI – 156 answers were received from large Finnish companies 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 9 Main Results of the Studies (1/2) • The results of four studies shared very similar • qualities The goal of starting BI has mainly been – a need for better information and knowledge to support their strategic and operative planning and decision-making – a need to obtain knowledge about the business environment and its development strategic and operative actions 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 10 Main Results of the Studies (2/2) • The most significant benefit provided by BI has been: – an increase in the utilisation and sharing of existing information resources in companies – the provision of better-quality information – faster decision-making – earlier anticipated dangers and opportunities • The interviewees saw BI already as a crucial element for competitive business operations 17/07/2015 www.bim.tut.fi 11 Conclusions • BI is a tool of medium-size and large Finnish • • • 17/07/2015 companies BI will become more and more systematic within Finnish companies since the emphasis on BI will increase The results cannot be generalised to all Finnish companies Studies have been quite superficial in Finland and worldwide -> There is a considerable need for development of BI and BI studies www.bim.tut.fi 12 References (1/2) • • • • Hannula, M. & Pirttimäki, V. 2003.
