Are you APP ready? Numeracy Subject Leader’s Twilights Spring 2009 http://nationalstrategies.standards. dcsf.gov.uk/primary Updates • PNS support materials coming into schools: - Moving on with assessment in mathematics – developing classroom practice - Overcoming barriers in mathematics – helping children move from level 1 to level 2 - Securing Level 4 in mathematics Training • Day 2 of Assessment in Mathematics for Y2,3 and 4 teachers and Y5 and 6 teachers - end of February and March • TA training in the summer term: - Using and applying mathematics for Teaching Assistants (11 June) - Written calculations for Teaching Assistants (18 June) Subject Leader Updates - 10 June – Preston Primary, Yeovil 11 June – Puriton Primary 16 June – Cotford St Luke Primary 17 June – St Aldhelm’s, Doulting APP • • • • • • • • • • Rationale Location of information Structure of the guideline sheets The APP process Completing the guidelines Standards Files Moderation Points to consider Action planning Support materials Rationale: The need to support teacher assessment in mathematics • Feedback from teachers • Increase confidence in making level judgements beyond KS1 • Need for consistency across the key stages • Increased knowledge of ‘levelness’ Tracking systems are only as good as the accuracy of the data entered into them! Ma1 3 assessment focuses Framework strand Using and applying mathematics Problem Solving Communicating Reasoning Assessment focuses Ma2 6 assessment focuses Framework strands Calculating Counting and understanding numbers Numbers and the number system Fractions and decimals Knowing and using number facts Operations, relationships between them Mental methods Assessment focuses Solving numerical problems Written methods Ma3 3 assessment focuses Framework strands Understanding shapes Properties of shape Properties of position and movement Measuring Measures Assessment focuses Ma4 2 assessment focuses Framework strand Handling Data and Using and applying mathematics Processing and representing data Interpreting data Assessment focuses Framework Strands How do the renewed maths framework strands link to the Attainment Targets (AT) and the Assessment Focuses (AF) ? National Curriculum AT Assessment Focuses Starting the APP process • Select a sample of pupils • Use annotated examples of pupils’ work (standards files) as reference points and benchmarks • Termly, review the evidence (written, spoken and observed) for each assessment focus • Select the appropriate ‘level boundary’ and arrive at judgements using the assessment guidelines sheet • Undertake in-school moderation with colleagues What evidence helps you complete the guidelines? Think about: • Consistency • Independence • In a range of contexts Making a level judgement • Best fit • Teacher Assessment end of KS2 Ma1 20% Ma2 50% Ma3 20% Ma4 10% • No exact formulae • Ma2 will have the greatest weighting – same weighting as others combined Periodic Teacher Assessment Ongoing Teacher Assessments- ‘best fit’ level judgement gathered from a range written, oral and observational evidence over time Intelligent sub-levels Samples moderated internally and externally making appropriate use of standards files available on the Primary Framework Low Level 3 Secure Level 3 High Level 3 Level 3 Level ‘3c’ Level ‘3b’ Transitional Assessment tests/tasks Ranges of scores from a single standardised task/ test Level ‘3a’ Standardisation Purpose - to check the consistency of judgements Use APP Standards files for standardisation Standards files available online for below level 1 to high level 5 Mathematics Standards Files Mathematics Standards Files Moderation • Validity of judgements • Variety of models • No one size fits all solution What next… Things to consider when starting to use APP How will you manage the process for your school? It needs time to set up and organised in a way that is manageable (long-term). Initially, it requires more time until you are familiar with the detail of the AF’s. Points to consider • • • • • SMT Assessment for Learning Reviewing Learning Curriculum Level Judgements Moderation Useful Documents for Action Planning • Assessment for Learning – AfL self evaluation grids, The AfL Strategy • Reviewing Learning – Support for making judgements handout • Curriculum Level Judgements – Standards Files What is there to help me?
