The capability involves students in learning to make the most of the digital technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve and limiting the risks to themselves and others in a digital environment. The Melbourne Declaration on the Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA 2008) recognises that in a digital age, and with rapid and continuing changes in the ways that people share, use, develop and communicate with ICT, young people need to be highly skilled in its use. To participate in a knowledge-based economy and to be empowered within a technologically sophisticated society now and into the future, students need the knowledge, skills and confidence to make ICT work for them at school, at home, at work and in their communities. • Information and communication technologies are fast and automated, interactive and multimodal, and they support the rapid communication and representation of knowledge to many audiences and its adaptation in different contexts. They transform the ways that students think and learn and give them greater control over how, where and when they learn. Introduction to General Capability, Australian Curriculum • Why iPads? • TCEO supports Apple technology. Technology in the systemic schools is at the direction of the TCEO and compatibility is a strong consideration. • We have access to two technicians who visit the school if there is a need. • Staff are comfortable with the use of Mac Notebooks and Desktop Units. • Cost 2 or 3 iPads to one laptop device. iPads Currently there are iPads being used in a large number of schools across all educational sectors in this State. Within Primary Schools in the Catholic System most are using iPads on a 1:1 basis (one per student) only SMC has chosen to move with a different device (Years 5-12). Special Learning Needs Students within the Catholic System are trialling the use of iPads (we currently have 4 of these iPads within the school) Each classroom at St Cuthbert’s has the use of one iPad2 St Cuthbert’s is trialling 30 iPad Minis (each Learning Unit has been allocated a 6 week block with exclusive use) - purpose to investigate use possibilities and problems. Where, Why, How? • Where? A 1:1 across the whole school, in a particular learning unit or ? • Why? Costs to Parents and School Constraints exist due to bandwidth into the school, with the NBN this will change, but we have no date for the NBN connection. Constraints exist due to the current wireless network within the school. If introduced in the Year Five Six Unit, for some students moving onto SVC or SMC, parents may find the expense too much, for only one or two years use. (Both SMC and SVC do not permit BYO devices additionally SMC do not use the Apple Platform). iPad use in the Australian Curriculum Presenting Word Processing Mind Mapping Storyboarding Taking Photos Podcasting Video Recording Calculating Creating Graphs Organising Collaborating Communicating Organising Ideas Feedback 1/2 Trial For 10 weeks the Grade 1/2 and Grade 2 Class have had the use of 30 iPad Minis (used in a one to one way) Student Feedback Area Used for Literacy How was it used Supporting Lesson, photography and creative work What do you like about the iPad? Maths, Games Should we have them Yes/No/Not Sure Problems None Feedback 1/2 Trial Staff Feedback Area Used for How was it used Literacy, Numeracy, Religion, Art, Science, History extension, support and for creative work with photos, movies and other publications. Most valuable for engaging students in learning by alternative methods, recording ideas and events, organising and showing their learning and understanding Problems transporting, security, safety, misplacing Should we have them Yes Apps etc email - communication calendar - organisation edmodo - organisation, communication & work camera - recording evidence clock (comparing times, timer, stopwatch) voice recording, internet access pages, imovie, iphoto, puppetpals, Biblebuddies, Dice, Maths Trainer, Geoboard, Number Rack, Numberlines, iBooks, Storykit, iTunes U, Garageband, myscript calculator, atlas and Dictionary Apps Required Apps these can be purchased individually but by using volume education licensing (VEL) costs on most Apps can be halved eg Pages $10.99 becomes $5.49 using VEL - method requires school to purchase then hand out access codes. Financing the Device 1:1 In a 1:1 program parents would need to fund the device for their child. Introduction of the Device would incur some costs to the school. Updating existing wireless networking. Apps (software)**, Apple TV for each unit/classroom. We still need to update laptops and printers. Need to allow for additional ICT devices. iPad v iPad Mini *advertised commercial price comparison iPad2 iPad Mini cost $429 $369 weight 652 grams 308 grams visibility easier to site in the classroom small enough to be lost inside folders and books Battery Life 10 hour 10 hour Life Expectancy 2-3 years 2-3 years Protocols for using a Personal ICT Device Responsibly for Learning at School Student Responsibilities 1. I will bring my ICT device to school fully charged. 2. I will protect my ICT device against damage to the best of my ability, including using a protective cover. 3. I will use a pass code or password to protect my device against unauthorised use. 4. I will ensure my device home screen contains appropriate wallpaper and language. 5. I will only open my device and use applications and websites when directly instructed to do so by my teacher. (Other sites, apps and games are not to be opened or used at school). 6. I will only use the School WiFi system for internet access when I am at school. 7. When my device is not being used, the lid or cover will remain closed. 8. I understand that the ICT Usage Policy applies to the use of Personal ICT Devices. (see St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School ICT Usage Agreement available on the School Website) If I am not responsible in the use of my ICT device at school, then I understand that appropriate disciplinary actions may be taken which may include the restriction of use of my ICT device at school. Parent Responsibilities: • 1. Personal devices should be fully charged when they are brought to school. • 2. Students should transport the device in an appropriate protective cover to minimise potential damage. • 3. Personal devices being used at school should contain apps and programs which are suitable for a primary school environment. • 4. Student use of ICT devices at home should always be with parental or adult supervision. • 5. Students should be aware of cyber-safety advice. Problems and Issues: COST SAFETY/DAMAGE/TRANSPORT SECURITY APPROPRIATE USE cases (my niece’s ipad - grade 8 was smashed within the first few weeks of school and cost $200 to repair the screen. Cost for required apps? Plan for use/access at school to keep safe, etc. Upgrade timeframes. • Support only shared ipads as a resource. Very costly option for families. A great tool when used well. How do you police/control games and education. • Happy to assist in any way, shape or form. iPad minis are brilliant. • Really do not have an opinion except to say this is going to become another financial inhibitor for a single parent with inconsistent income. I do not want my child to be ostracised through yet another gadget that separates the haves and have nots. I guess it simply means something else we, as a family, will have to forgo in the name of Quality Education. • I would need some greater discussion than a notice to give my support or not to give my support. Evidence supporting when introduction is best would be helpful. We worry about some families budgets being able to support the purchase. • I need more information, such as cost, before I can make a decision. She already has a Galaxy Samsung not an iPad. • Maybe as long as staff have the correct training • However I think the cost should be subsidised by the school as a bulk purchase from a supplier, also software cost for licensing multiple users including anit-virus/internet protection. • Can other tablets be used ie andriod tablets? We have a Samsung tablet not an ipad • Need more information. • Some web sites (using Flashplayer) used in class are not supported currently on the iPad. • Would consider it if it was more broadly a tablet programme as that give parents a choice in lost and longevity Problems and Issues: Problems and Issues: • A few of our thoughts are: • While the purchase of an ipad for us is a very expensive addition to our household, we could manage but I would worry for those families with more than 1 child in Primary or Secondary schools. these are financially tough times for families. • I recognise some of the benefits of ipads in schools. If they were to be introduced I see learning support and older classes perhaps benefiting first. I am in favour of a shared bank of ipads between class clusters. • How do you intend to control what apps would be on the ipad when it will be privately purchased? Will children be transporting an expensive learning tool to and from school? (young children often have leaking drink, yoghurt containers) Will they be kept securely at school? How are they insured for school use? If an ipad does need repair work, will children be disadvantaged if they don't have their ipad at school? • Parent sessions on their use in each classroom would also be welcomed. • Why can't a lease to buy option be given to parents? • What status symbol does this give children if some students can afford ipads and others can’t. Possible Options A (Parent Funded outright 1:1) B (Levy Funded - shared time and access) C (Remain as is - very limited shared exposure) D (A combination of A & B) Option - A 1:1 Program Parents Funded, Owned and Managed Cost $369 (mini) $20 case $30 apps ? insurance (check home policy) Option - A 1:1 Program Parents Funded, Owned and Managed Cost $429 (iPad2) $20 case $30 apps ? insurance (check home policy) Option - B Mini (iPad2) 28 per learning unit (1:2) - (28x$400=$11,200) Mini 28 per learning unit (1:2) - (28x$460=$12880) iPad2 Current ICT Levy per child is $27 per child. This does not cover our current ICT needs in terms of network, internet, printers, toner) This needs to be maintained. A further $49 ($56) is needed to purchase one additional set of iPads. ($98/$112 for two sets). By 2015 there would be 3 sets. 2016 would be the first year that replacement of sets would need to commence. Possible Option - C Continue with current state, allowing those students who are able to BYOD (bring their own device) where it is suitable. NEXT STEP?
